As of a recent Microsoft Windows update, Internet Explorer will NOT open at all. While a shortcut may remain, clicking on it will instead launch Microsoft Edge, Microsoft's new and more secure default internet browser based on Chrome.
Due to some legacy websites still requiring Internet Explorer, Microsoft has added a feature to Edge called "Internet Explorer Compatibility. However, this feature is turned off by default for security reasons, and will require changing some settings to get these legacy websites to work.
Below are the steps you will need to take to enable Internet Explorer Compatibility.
- Open Edge
- Click on the three dots in the top right then go to settings.
- At the top of settings, search for “explorer.”
- Scroll down to “internet explorer compatibility”
- Change the setting “Let internet explorer open sites in Microsoft Edge” to “Incompatible Sites Only”
- Change “Allow sites to be reloaded in IE Mode” to “Allow”
- Click “Add” and enter the webpage you’re trying to reach with internet explorer.
- Click “Restart” in Edge.
The specific webpage you added to the list should now load in "Internet Explorer Compatibility Mode" and should load properly.
